First double sea lock: National monument Willem I lock in North Holland Canal reopened

The historic Willem I lock in the North Holland Canal is being restored to reopen for boat traffic after remaining largely unused since 1992. Originally commissioned by King Willem I in 1819 to help vessels bypass silted waters, the site remains a protected national monument.

Around 1800, Amsterdam faced severe economic challenges as the IJ became increasingly difficult to navigate due to silt accumulation. While Jan Blanken Jansz. proposed damming the IJ to solve these problems, international tensions initially stalled the project. King Willem I eventually intervened, ordering the construction of the Great North Holland Canal in 1816. Despite local opposition from Amsterdam officials concerned about competition, the project proceeded, and the Willem I lock was inaugurated in 1824. Large sailing vessels used the canal to reach the city, often requiring horse-drawn assistance along the towpath. By 1876, the canal became obsolete due to the opening of the North Sea Canal, which offered a shorter route to the sea.

Today, the Willem I lock is a recognized national monument that has been largely inactive since 1992. Authorities are now working to restore the smaller of the two lock chambers to operational status. The project involves extensive dredging, renovating the quay walls, and installing new lock gates to accommodate modern traffic through remote operation.
