Having overcome a troubled past involving conflict and substance abuse, Gilliot now dedicates his time to supporting vulnerable members of his community.
Lesley Gilliot, a 76-year-old resident of Amsterdam, is a familiar face at the Gerardus Majellakerk, where he is frequently accompanied by his pet canary, Michael Jackson. Gilliot, who moved to the Netherlands from Suriname over five decades ago, initially led a turbulent life marked by fighting and substance abuse during his time working in Amsterdam's nightlife. Following the birth of his son 46 years ago, he decided to turn his life around, returning to school and eventually finding solace in his faith and community work.
He founded a project known as De Hangmannen, which has evolved from a small gathering in his home into a weekly support group of fifty people. The group brings together diverse individuals, including homeless residents and single parents, to share life challenges and offer mutual support. Currently, Gilliot faces financial hardships, including a need for a specialized medical bed, and he relies on the support of his son to manage his daily life.
