International Theater Amsterdam building to be officially renamed Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam: 'Wish of many visitors'

International Theater Amsterdam building to be officially renamed Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam: 'Wish of many visitors'

The historic venue known as Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) is reverting to its original name, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, to address long-standing public confusion. While the building will return to its 1894 title, the production organization will continue to operate under the ITA brand.

The iconic building on Leidseplein will soon revert to its historical name, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. The venue, which has been known as Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) since the 2018 merger between the Stadsschouwburg and Toneelgroep Amsterdam, will see its original title restored following feedback from the public. While the organization will continue to operate under the name ITA, the building itself will reclaim the title it has held since its construction in 1894.

Clayde Menso, the general director of the organization, stated that the decision was made after consistent requests from visitors, local residents, and theater companies. There had been ongoing confusion regarding the identity of the venue, as many people continued to associate the historic structure with its traditional name. By returning to the name Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, the management aims to clarify the distinction between the physical theater building and the production company that performs within it.
