People with prosthetics can now safely ride Efteling attractions

Efteling has introduced a new safety strap called SafeStrap, developed by TU Delft, that allows guests with prosthetics to keep them on during certain thrill rides. This initiative, created in collaboration with healthcare professionals and patient advocates, ensures safety while improving accessibility for visitors with disabilities.
The Efteling theme park has introduced a new safety device called the SafeStrap, which allows individuals with prosthetics to keep their devices on while riding attractions. Previously, guests were required to remove their prosthetics due to the risk of them coming loose during rides, posing potential safety hazards. Developed as a graduation project by India Hoekman at TU Delft, the strap holds the prosthetic securely in place. The innovation was spearheaded by rehabilitation physician Iris van Wijk and the patient association KorterMaarKrachtig in collaboration with the university and the theme park.
Currently, the SafeStrap is implemented at the Baron 1898 and the Hooghmoed free-fall towers, with plans to expand to the new Ravenring attraction in December. The design process involved extensive cooperation with prosthetic users and healthcare professionals to ensure effectiveness. The safety device has been made available to other amusement parks globally, provided they complete the necessary certification process to approve the straps for their own specific rides.
