38 reports of physical violence during WorldPride: people spat on, pelted, and kicked
During the recent WorldPride event in Amsterdam, the reporting organization Rita received 516 discrimination complaints, including 38 reports of physical violence and assaults. Most incidents took place during travel to and from the event and were primarily motivated by the victims' sexual orientation or gender identity.
During the two-week WorldPride event held from July 25 to August 8, the reporting center Rita received 516 reports of discrimination. While the majority of incidents involved verbal insults, 38 cases specifically involved physical violence, including instances where victims were kicked, pelted with objects, or struck. Seven of these reports resulted in serious injuries such as concussions or broken noses, leading to hospitalizations. Most of these incidents occurred while participants were commuting to or from the festivities rather than at the event venues themselves.
Discrimination based on sexual orientation was the primary driver for these reports, often triggered by victims holding hands, wearing rainbow symbols, or expressing their gender identity. Additionally, 15 reports highlighted discriminatory behavior by taxi and rideshare drivers, including refusals to provide service. In response to these findings, organizers are working with the Amsterdam municipal government and police to ensure these reports lead to concrete action. Safer Spaces were also implemented throughout the city this year to provide support for those feeling unsafe during the celebrations.
