New artwork in Artis aquarium aims to make you feel like you are deep in the sea

The Artis aquarium in Amsterdam has unveiled a new immersive art installation by Olafur Eliasson called Deep Seeing Currents. The 12-minute experience uses authentic underwater audio and lighting to simulate a journey to the deepest parts of the ocean.

A new immersive art installation titled Deep Seeing Currents has debuted at the Artis aquarium in Amsterdam. Created by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, the piece invites visitors into a completely dark room where they embark on a twelve-minute simulated descent to the bottom of the ocean, reaching depths of up to 11 kilometers. The experience utilizes 55 authentic field recordings, including whale songs, volcanic eruptions, and cracking ice, paired with subtle LED lighting to replicate the deep-sea environment. None of the sounds were generated by a computer, as all were collected during scientific expeditions.

Artis commissioned the work due to Eliasson's focus on ecology and environmental themes. The artist noted that the deep sea remains a blind spot for humanity, as its remote and inhospitable nature makes direct exploration nearly impossible for most people. By bringing these sounds and atmospheres to the surface, the exhibition aims to connect visitors with a vast, mysterious ecosystem that remains largely unknown to the general public.
