Amazon Prime Video secures global streaming rights for the Emmys

Amazon Prime Video has secured the exclusive global rights to stream the Emmy Awards starting in 2027, replacing the traditional rotation system used by American networks. The ceremony will be available to stream for free worldwide without the need for a subscription.

Starting in 2027, Amazon Prime Video will become the exclusive global broadcaster for the Emmy Awards. This agreement ends the long-standing rotation system used since 1955 among major American networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. The ceremony will be streamed live worldwide every September and will be accessible for free, meaning viewers do not need a Prime Video subscription to watch the event.

Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego stated that the move aims to provide the prestigious awards with unprecedented reach, allowing audiences in 240 countries to tune in. Amazon executives view this as a significant expansion of their live content strategy, which has previously focused heavily on professional sports leagues such as the NFL and the NBA. This development reflects a broader industry shift toward digital platforms, as evidenced by the decision to move the Oscars to YouTube starting in 2029.
