Photographer Roos Aldershoff captures the layers of the abandoned Walenweeshuis on the Vijzelgracht

Photographer Roos Aldershoff has captured the architectural history and current state of the former Walenweeshuis in Amsterdam through a series of twenty photographs. The historic building, which transitioned from an orphanage to a cultural consulate before entering its current restoration phase, is being showcased at the Keizersgrachtkerk until October 24.

The Walenweeshuis, located on the Vijzelgracht in Amsterdam, was constructed between 1669 and 1671 to house Protestant orphans from the French-speaking Walloon community. After serving as an orphanage for three centuries, the historic building hosted the French consulate and the cultural institution Maison Descartes from 1971 until 2017. Following a period of vacancy and occupation, the monument was purchased by Noorderhoofd Real Estate, with plans for a major restoration currently underway.

Photographer Roos Aldershoff has documented the building's layered history in a series of twenty images, focusing on the tension between its original purpose and its current state. By emphasizing symmetry, light, and architectural geometry, she highlights traces of human presence throughout the structure. The collection is currently on display at the Keizersgrachtkerk until October 24, where a dedicated lecture and the associated photo book are also available to the public.
