The Festival of Death brings a theatrical tribute to all who have passed away

Theater group De Theatertoep is hosting the Festival van de Dood at Theater De Richel to encourage a more open and theatrical approach to grieving. Taking inspiration from Mexican traditions, the event on October 30 features various performances, live music, and a memorial altar to help visitors navigate the complex emotions surrounding death.

Starting in 2024, the theater group De Theatertoep has taken over the management of Theater De Richel. Led by business manager Timo Huijzendveld, the group aims to change the way death is perceived in the Netherlands by organizing the Festival van de Dood. Inspired by the festive traditions of Mexico, the organizers hope to provide a more theatrical and open space for attendees to process their emotions and grief, moving away from more rigid Dutch cultural customs regarding the afterlife.

The event, scheduled for October 30 in the venue's Grote Zaal, offers a blend of comedy and poignancy. Performances include an excerpt from the group's own production, Four Cremations and a Divorce, alongside appearances by comedian Daniëlle Schel and theater maker Sjònata. Accompanied by mariachi music and a memorial altar, journalist Els Quagebeur will host the evening, ensuring a shared experience that balances humor and sadness to help the audience navigate their personal experiences with loss.
