Photos Bertien van Manen took of Tokyo youth thirty years ago on display in the Netherlands for the first time
The photographic series Tokyo Revisited by the late Bertien van Manen is being exhibited in the Netherlands for the first time. The collection captures the daily lives of youths in 1990s Tokyo through intimate and candid portraits.
Photographer Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) spent three weeks in 1996 documenting the daily lives of youths in Tokyo. By learning the language and immersing herself in their culture, she captured intimate and unguarded moments using small cameras. Her work from this period, titled Tokyo Revisited, offers an authentic and raw glimpse into a Japanese generation during the 1990s.
This collection is currently being presented to the public for the first time in the Netherlands. The pop-up exhibition is organized by the Bertien van Manen Foundation in collaboration with the Annet Gelink Gallery. While the photographer was based in Amsterdam for much of her career, covering diverse global subjects ranging from Appalachian mining communities to life in the former Soviet Union, this specific exhibition will be held in Rotterdam on November 7 and 8.
