"Everyone was a fan" of chess icon Jan Timman, who has died at 74

Dutch chess legend Jan Timman, famously known as "The Best of the West," passed away in Arnhem on Wednesday at the age of 74. A nine-time national champion, Timman reached the world number two ranking in 1982 and was regarded as the strongest player outside of the Soviet Union during the 1980s and 90s. He officially retired from competitive play earlier this year after participating in the 2024 Dutch Championship, marking the end of a career that spanned over five decades.
