Council supports free public transport for asylum seekers who volunteer
The Amsterdam city council has approved a pilot program for 2026 that provides free public transport to asylum seekers who volunteer, aiming to remove financial barriers to social integration. The six-month initiative will be evaluated for its effectiveness, alongside a supported proposal to research alternative identification systems for undocumented residents. Additionally, the council expressed its opposition to the criminalization of illegal stays to protect vulnerable populations within the city.
