Referendum on Amsterdam boycott of Israel not possible, committee rules

An advisory commission has ruled that a requested referendum on an Amsterdam boycott of Israel is inadmissible because foreign policy falls outside the legal jurisdiction of the city council. The proposal by the citizen collective Amsterdam Palestina Referendum gathered enough signatures, but the commission noted that municipalities cannot take concrete measures on international affairs. The Amsterdam city council is expected to make a final decision on whether to hold the referendum in May.
