Pianist and composer Umut Demirtaş is set to perform at the prestigious Concertgebouw and H'ART museum this September, marking a major milestone in his musical career. The 25-year-old Amsterdam native, who has Turkish roots, began his journey by practicing at the De Wachter community center in Nieuw-West. Despite facing social pressures in his youth where classical music was not considered trendy, he found a supportive environment at the local center that allowed him to hone his craft.
Demirtaş now successfully blends his cultural background with classical compositions, resulting in a unique, rhythmic, and fast-paced sound. He draws inspiration from figures like Stravinsky, who integrated their own heritage into their work. After years of hard work, his upcoming performances demonstrate how his dedication and talent have allowed him to transition from playing in a community center to taking the stage at some of the most celebrated venues in the Netherlands.
