Queer violence, activism and pride come together in the play 'Waiting for Marsha'

Queer violence, activism and pride come together in the play 'Waiting for Marsha'

The theater production Waiting for Marsha explores the complexities of contemporary queer activism and the rising threat of violence against the LGBTQ+ community. Directed by Raymi Sambo, the play is a co-production with Internationaal Theater Amsterdam that will tour from late September through mid-December.

The theater company Raymi Sambo Maakt is currently rehearsing a new production titled Waiting for Marsha, which examines contemporary activism within the queer community. Inspired by the legacy of Stonewall icon Marsha P. Johnson, the play explores the difficult question of how far one should go to combat rising violence and intolerance against LGBTQ+ individuals. Director Raymi Sambo notes that the production addresses a personal and societal shift, noting that the freedom he experienced in Amsterdam during the 1990s feels increasingly diminished in the present climate.

Produced in collaboration with Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, the play aims to empower a new generation by emphasizing visibility and resilience. Sambo draws on his own experiences with street harassment to fuel the narrative, hoping to inspire a sense of collective strength and urgency. The production will embark on a tour across various theaters, running from September 25 through December 17, as it seeks to reignite a conversation about standing up against prejudice and reclaiming the safety of the queer community.
