Marc Overmars has stepped down as technical director of Royal Antwerp FC due to critical health issues and severe exhaustion. The former Ajax director, who suffered a heart attack in 2022, stated that he must end his professional career to prevent further deterioration of his physical condition.
Marc Overmars has announced his immediate resignation as technical director of Royal Antwerp FC, citing severe health concerns. The former Dutch football star, who previously suffered a major heart attack in late 2022, explained that the ongoing stress and exhaustion of his professional life have become unsustainable. Overmars stated that medical professionals warned him of serious consequences if he did not prioritize his well-being and cease his current responsibilities immediately.
Overmars joined the Belgian club in 2022, shortly after his controversial departure from Ajax, where he had served for a decade before facing a global suspension due to professional misconduct. Under his leadership, Antwerp achieved a league title victory in 2023 alongside coach Mark van Bommel. Although contract extension talks were underway, the director expressed deep regret that he could not continue his tenure. He emphasized that he must now fully step away from professional activities to recover his health.
